Bag of Rice Project #550 -A visit to the Moses family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Moses family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Marlow Family, and this is the 550th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Moses family in Afaha village in Akwa Ibom, which is located in Akwa Ibom State, the southern part of Nigeria. When we went to the family compound, they were shocked when they saw us and asked if they could help us. We told them we came to see their family and that we had a sack of rice for them. The family was shocked that someone could gift them a bag of rice. They told us it has been hard for them since the new regime started, and they have found it very hard to feed. They said in their local dialect, abasi ami ani e odudu– this God is powerful. They asked us which government official sent us and we told them we were not sent by the government and that the rice was donated to them by someone. They did not believe it—that someone they did not know would donate a bag of rice for them. The Moses family is blessed with seven kids, and only two of them are in school. This is because they do not have enough money to send the kids to school since they find it hard to feed them. The family stays in a one-room apartment, and it is built with blocks; the house is not completed, and lizards crawl into the house because it doesn’t have a ceiling. The family makes use of a bathroom at the back of their house, and they are unable to get a modern bathroom

The family uses firewood for cooking; they are unable to get cooking gas. The family uses firewood to cook. Using firewood to cook is harmful to health, but people have no choice but to use it. The Moses family does not have a job to do, and they always find it hard to feed. The wife and husband are unemployed. They engage in menial jobs to feed the family, and it has been hard for them to feed; getting a bag of rice was like winning a World Cup trophy.

They thanked the donors for making it possible for them to get a bag of rice during this happy time and hoped that God would bless them with all they did. The family was ecstatic and showed us their sincere appreciation before we left.
