Bag of Rice Project #552 -A visit to the William family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the William family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS,  this is the 552nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Williams family in Afaha village, which is domiciled in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The family was shocked when they saw us, and we told them what we brought for them. They were shocked when we gave them a bag of rice, which is a strange thing to happen in Nigeria. Considering the amount a bag of rice goes for, which is more than the minimum wage of the country. The family gave us a receptive welcome and were happy to see us after what we told them. The family is blessed with five children, but when we visited, only two were around. The family stays in a one-room apartment, which is not conducive for the family. The family lives in a mud house, which is on the verge of collapsing, and they are unable to build the place because they do not have the money to get a new house and can’t afford to buy cement at the time, considering the economy of the country.

As firewood is the least expensive fuel available, the Williams family uses it to cook at the back of their home. This cooking technique is regarded as risky and harmful to health. Given her advanced age, the elderly woman shouldn’t be cooking with firewood because it is unhealthy for her and not a recommended cooking technique. The spouse passed away 5 years ago, according to Mrs. Eno Williams. Mrs. Eno Williams is a farmer, and she uses that to fend for the family and take care of her family.

The bag of rice that the donor donated to the Williams family made them delighted. They prayed for God to bless the giver and provide for their needs at whatever time they prayed to Him. The family was happy, and they smiled as we left them. They were happy they had something to eat.
