Bag of Rice Project #553 -A visit to the Okon family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Okon family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to a private donor , and this is the 553rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We learned about the lucky family in the Afaha  village in Akwa Ibom State. When we arrived at their compound, we met them outdoors. They were overjoyed to see us and were in disbelief when we told them why we had come to join their family. They had greeted us with open arms. They asked which politician was sponsoring the project, and we had to tell them it was a donation to them instead of a political endorsement. They were ecstatic to see something they couldn’t believe. The family is blessed with four kids at the time of our visit, only one was around as the others went to the farm, but we were told they don’t go to school since they can’t afford the fees. The family’s one-bedroom, which is built with mud and on the verge of collapsing, they are unable to get a proper house to stay in. They share a bathroom and toilet with their neighbors and are unable to pay their electricity bill because they are unable to feed themselves, according to the information we were given.

The family uses firewood to cook outside since it’s the least expensive choice they have. They are unable to afford the present price of a small gas cooker. They cannot afford cooking gas, so even though cooking with firewood is detrimental, they have no other choice. Mr. Okon supports his family by farming. The wife was not around when we visited, as we were told. She wants to sell clothes at the neighborhood market, but she does not have the capital to start this business she has an interest in.

The family thanked the donor, expressing their thanks and gladness for providing them with a bag of rice that was worth the national minimum wage. They prayed for the donor, saying that all they did would be worthwhile and that God would repay them. As we drove away, they gave us a smile and a wave.
