Bag of Rice Project #555 -A visit to the Charles family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Charles family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  an anonymous donation , and this is the 555th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Charles family in Mbiaobong Itam, which is in the Southern part of Nigeria. The Charles family was introduced to us by a friend, who reached out to us when he herd that we were looking for families in need. When we got to the compound, we found the wife walking in front of the compound, when she saw our vehicle stop in front of her compound, she welcomed us and was shocked we were in her compound and she asked us what brought us to the compound and we told her we want to give her a bag of rice. The family didn’t believe it because the price of a bag of rice is greater than the monthly minimum wage in the country. The family is blessed with 5 kids, they were not around when we visited. The family stay in a one-bedroom apartment with the kids. The husband came out as we were conversing with the wife and the wife passed the information she got from us to him, the man was overjoyed to see us.

The Charles family cooks with firewood which is harmful to their health and they cook at the back of their house, they told us the children went to fetch firewood at the bush. They are unable to afford cooking gas because it is expensive, so they are left with no option but to use firewood. Mr. Charles is a bricklayer, and his wife is a hairdresser. they do this to fend for the family.

The bag of rice that the donor donated to Mr Charles’s family made them happy and they were excited. They prayed for God to bless the giver and provide for their needs at whatever time they prayed to Him. The family prayed for us as we drove out. They were happy they had gotten Easter rice and that God had visited them.
