Bag of Rice Project #56 -A visit to the Umoren family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Umoren family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jamie Michaelis this is the 56th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

Umoren kids. They are bright and beautiful.

We met this family on a recommendation from a church leader, we had not met this family and completely trusted the person who recommended them to us and we were amazed at the condition of the family we met. The Umoren family is a special family. Living in conditions that were very sad to say the least, they manage to cram 7 people into a one room apartment. The Umorens have 4 kids. We did not meet Mr Umoren at home but his wife and grandmother we met and spoke to.

Mr Umoren is unemployed and his wife said he was out working in a factory loading water into trucks but that is a temporary job and will only last as long as a week. His wife Mrs Fintan is a trader and she sells fresh tomatoes at a local market and has been sustaining the family for a while now. The inside of their home looks very bare and their kitchen was a little bit far from the house and was shared with other tenants so we did not take a picture of it.

The inside of their house

We fell in love with the Umoren kids. They were bright and as I came in each of them greeted and shook my hands. For a moment I was talking to them and only got to meet with their parents later. When we introduced ourselves and told them why we came. Mrs Fintan was so happy, her mom was speechless, they did not know us from anywhere and were very surprised and grateful that we could help them. The family are in real need of help and were very grateful for the family that donated to them. And I felt happy seeing the happy looks on their faces.
