Bag of Rice Project #565 -A visit to the Ibok family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The following story is about the Ibok family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Helen Root, and this is the 565th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Ibok family on the outskirts of Uyo. A friend referred us to the family. When we drove into the compound, it was as if no one was around, we did not find anyone sitting outside, we had to knock on their door and we saw Mr. Ibok, he welcomed us and gave us a receptive welcome. He called his wife out and told her “We have a visitor”, she came out and welcomed us. They both asked us the purpose of our visit and we told them why we came, they did not believe what they heard, that a full bag of rice was donated to them by someone without any strings attached. They never believed someone could donate a full bag of rice considering how bad the economy of Nigeria is right now. The wife danced around the compound and said in their local dialect “ABASI ADI NSE” meaning God has visited me. They complained of how hard it is for them to feed their children and they are unable to eat twice in a day. Mr. Ibok has four children and they are all out of school, when we visited they were not around, the parents said they went to fetch water for someone to make money for themselves. They live in a one-room apartment with their kids.

The family cooks with cooking gas, and they do this inside their house. Mr and Mrs Ibok are traders, they sell at the local market to be able to fend for the family, but at the moment they are unable to buy fish again to sell considering the inflation in the country, they have exhausted all the money they make in feeding the children and unable to send them to school as the school fees have skyrocketed and this has made them not to go to the market.

The bag of rice that the donor donated to Mr and Mrs. Ibok and their kid made them delighted. Every time they prayed to God, they prayed that God would bless the donor and meet their needs. Excited, Mr and Mrs Ibok prayed for us till we departed.
