Bag of Rice Project #57 -A visit to the Elijah family

Spread the love

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Elijah family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lisa Jones this is the 57th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

Our next visit was to the Elijah family. They were recommended to us by their church leader. The Elijahs have two kids and they live in a one room apartment that was constructed in a way for them to have a zinc add on that served as their kitchen. I don’t know how else to describe it and the picture will do a better job of the description. There toilet and bathroom is not in the same house and they share it with other tenants.

Mr Elijah works in a factory that is in another city. It takes him 2 hours to get to work so he always leaves very early in the morning and comes back home late at night. Mrs Elijah is a trader and sells Palm oil, which is used by some people to replace groundnut or vegetable oil. We met her at home preparing dinner with her daughters. She was cutting up Pumpkin leaves to make soup for dinner.

This family came to our attention because of the need they had. The husband does not earn much and he is not around for most part of the day and his wife really struggles to take care of the family. When we came to their house and explained why we came to visit them, the family was overjoyed. The smile on their faces warmed my heart. They extended their thanks to those that donated and I know the bag of Rice will make a big difference to their family. This visit was also special to us because it led to our discovery of another family we had not planned on visiting but that’s another story.
