Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Essien family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS , and this is the 570th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Essien family in Uyo village. We did not see anyone outside when we got to the compound; we had to knock, and they came out. When they saw us, they gave us a receptive welcome and asked if we came to preach. And they offered us to sit, which we politely declined. We then told them what brought us to their compound; they were so happy and danced around the compound; They were shocked because such had not happened before, considering how the economy of the country is, that even the current minimum wage cannot get a bag of rice. They did not believe that someone could donate a full bag of rice to them; they even had to ask if we were politicians, and we told them we were not affiliated with any political party. The Essien family stays in a one-room apartment that is constructed with plywood and zinc; they are unable to build a proper house with blocks or rent a better one. The house they live in lacks basic amenities; they go to the stream to fetch water, which is not clean and they practice open defecation. Mrs. Essien is blessed with 4 beautiful kids, and they are all out of school because the mother cannot afford the basic things for them.
Mrs Essien cooks with firewood, which is not advisable to do because of the negative effect. She is unable to afford cooking gas because it is expensive, and even if she gets it, the amount she would use in refilling is expensive. Mrs Essien is a hired cleaner, she cleans people houses, and she does this to feed the house; since her husband died, she has been the only one taking care of the children.
The fact that a stranger could hand them a bag of rice without even knowing their name made the family happy. They prayed that God would always be there for them and requested that he keep watching over them, guiding them and providing for them in their time of need. The family appeared happy and enthusiastic as we drove away. As we passed their house, they waved.
