Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Akan family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 572nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Akan family on the outskirts of Uyo. The family was recommended by a friend so we decided to visit them. When we got there, we saw a child playing outside; as he saw us drive in, he rushed inside to get the mother. The mother came out and gave us a receptive welcome and offered us a bench to sit on, which we politely declined. She asked us our purpose for visiting, and we told her that someone donated a bag of rice to her. She made us repeat it severally, and she had to ask us where the cameraman was hiding; it is as if we were there to prank her. We told her it was not a prank and brought out the bag of rice, she was shocked and did not believe her eyes. She was complaining bitterly about how the economy was, and someone would just give her a bag of rice without asking for anything in return; she prayed for the donor. The Akan family lives in a one-room apartment; the house lacks basic amenities, like electricity, a functioning toilet, and a bathroom, so they have to bathe and defecate in the open. The family is blessed with 3 beautiful kids, and they have all dropped out of school because of the current economy of Nigeria.
Mrs Akan cooks with a small cooking gas, and though the cooking gas is in a bad state, Mrs Akan is unemployed at the moment. She told us she was once a fish seller, but because of how the economy is, she is unable to go back to the market to buy fish again because of inflation. She said she would want to learn hairdressing so she could use that to feed the family; at the moment she engages in menial jobs to take care of the family.
The Akan family was thrilled to receive the bag of rice from the giver. Whenever they prayed to God, they asked Him to bless the giver and meet their needs. As we departed, the family grinned and seemed content. Having something to eat made them happy.
