Bag of Rice Project #573 -A visit to the Umoh family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Umoh family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Megan Wells, and this is the 573rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.   We met the Umoh family in Uyo village. When we got to the compound, we saw them sitting outside. They gave us a receptive welcome. They asked us our purpose for visiting them, that they had not seen this face in the community before. We told them why we were visiting them, that someone donated a bag of rice to them. They did not believe what we said; they wondered how someone could just donate a bag of rice to them without any strings attached. The family prayed for the donor and danced around the compound. Mrs Umoh is blessed with 6 kids and when we visited, only 1 of them was around. At the time of our visit, the husband was not in, we were told he went to the farm. Mrs Umoh lives in a one-room apartment with her 6 children and her husband; the house lacks basic amenities. She told us they have to wake up as early as 5 am to take their bath.

Even though Mrs. Umoh’s cooking gas is in poor condition, she still uses it to cook. She is unable to get a new one. Mrs. Umoh is a farmer and she does this with her husband to fend for the family. They own a small farm, which they feed from; at times they have to sell what they harvest from the farm.

In their gratitude and expression of gratitude, the family thanked the donor for giving them a bag of rice that was worth more than the national minimum wage. For the donor, they hoped that God would reward them and that all they did would be worthy. They waved and smiled at us as we drove away.
