Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ekwerre family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to The Marlow Family, and this is the 574th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Ekwere family in Nung Udoe. When we got to their compound we did not see anyone outside. We had to call them the traditional way because the house had no door, and we said, “WHO DEY HERE” in pidgin. Before they came out when they saw us, they gave us a receptive welcome and were surprised to see us, because they had not seen that face before. We told them our reason for visiting and they were surprised and shocked someone would donate a full bag of rice to them without requesting anything in return. They were so happy and they said, “Mkpo ukap Isua ke abasi aben adi ami” which means God has brought our Christmas present. The Ekwere family lives in a mud house that lacks all the basic amenities. They haven’t been able to have electricity in the house since the house was built and also they have a pit latrine, which is not good for their health. The family is blessed with 3 kids and two out of the three has dropped out of school because they do not have the money to fend for the three in school.
The Ekwere family is unable to get cooking gas. They have to resort to the cheap means of cooking, which is firewood. According to studies, cooking with firewood is harmful to health and can cause cancer of the lungs because of the amount of smoke they inhale but they have no choice because they do not have money to get a gas cylinder; also, it costs a lot to get a cylinder and filling it is not cheap because of the level of inflation in the country. Mr Ekwere had a bike he rode to fend for the family before he had surgery and lost his source of livelihood; he had to use his life savings to get himself and his wife, who was selling at the local market also had to commit all her money so the husband can get back to life. They are both unemployed at the moment and do menial jobs to fend to the family.
The fact that a complete stranger could hand them a bag of rice without even knowing their name made the family happy. They prayed that God would always be there for them and requested that he keep watching over them, guiding them, and providing for them in their time of need. The family appeared happy and enthusiastic as we drove away. As we passed their house, they waved.
