Bag of Rice Project #575 -A visit to the Augustine family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Augustine family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  TERRY SIMMONS , and this is the 575th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Augustine family on the outskirts of Uyo, a friend recommended the family. When we got to the compound, we met the children outside playing and asked them to get their parents. The mother came out with the children. They gave us a receptive welcome, and he offered us a seat, which we declined politely. The mother of the children asked us why we visited because he had not seen us before, we told her why we visited and she was shocked because it was strange for someone to give someone a bag of rice without any strings attached.  They were so happy they would have rice to cook, considering the amount a bag of rice costs now, which is higher than the minimum wage. The family was so happy. The family lives in a one-room apartment. They told us they are unable to pay their electricity bill and the landlord had to disconnect them and they have not had light in the apartment for two years now. They do not have the basic amenities in the house they have to bathe at the back of their house. The family is blessed with four kids and because of lack of funds, she is unable to send them to school.

The Augustine family are unable to afford cooking gas and they are left with no other choice than to fetch firewood from the forest. They told us they would like to have cooking gas but the money to get it is on the high side and they can’t afford it. Using firewood to cook is harmful to the health. Mrs. Augustine is a widow; she lost her husband to cancer and has been fending for the 4 children since then. She is a tailor and does that to care for the children.

Mrs. Augustine was so happy she was gifted a bag of rice and that would go a long way to feed her children. She thanked the donor and prayed that the lord would enlarge their coast and continue to bless them. The family was filled with joy as we left.
