Bag of Rice Project #578 -A visit to the Edikan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Edikan family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 578th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Edikan family at Nung Udoe. When we got to the compound, we saw two children playing in it. As they saw us, they shouted, mummy, mummy, mummy and rushed inside to get their mother. Mrs Edikan came out with the children and they held her hands. They told us she was blind and seeing her, she was pregnant. She greeted us and the children offered to sit, which we politely declined. We told Mrs. Edikan what brought us to the compound and she was so happy. When we brought out the rice, the children said, “Mummy, see rice.” They were happy and were playing around with their mother, the woman never believed someone could give them a bag of rice without any strings attached.  The Edikan’s stay in a one-room apartment and the house is not in good condition; the rooms leak when rain falls and they have to wait until it stops before they sweep the water out and they would be able to sleep there after that. The house they stay in does not have a bathtub; they take their bath at the back of their house. The family is blessed with 3 kids and at the moment only one of them is in school and she is on the verge of dropping out.

The family cooks with firewood; they cannot afford cooking gas and are left with no choice but to cook with firewood. The use of firewood to cook is harmful to health. Mrs. Edikan is the one who fends for the family; she goes to the market to sell even though she is blind. She sells at the local market, and the wife is the one who feeds the family; the husband has refused to support the family.

Mrs. Edikan and their child were thrilled to receive the bag of rice from the giver. They asked God to bless them and provide for their necessities each time they prayed. Mrs. Edikan and the children were so excited that they prayed for us till we left.
