Bag of Rice Project #580 -A visit to the Joseph family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Joeseph family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  Melissa Rae, and this is the 580th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Joseph family was recommended by a friend. When we got to the compound, we saw people sitting outside; the family welcomed us. The friend that recommended the family to us had to tell us everyone in the family is dumb and that they can hear us but can’t speak. They offered us to sit and we told them we were okay standing. We showed them the bag of rice donated to them and they were happy. They danced in the compound and they gave us a warm hug. We saw the way they expressed how they felt; they were so happy.  The family lives in a one-room apartment and this apartment was rented for them by someone because they do not have money to rent a house. Once the house rent expires, they are not sure they would be able to afford the rent. The family is blessed with 3 kids, they are unable to go to school because there is no money to get the basic amenities needed in school.

The family cooks with firewood; they are unable to afford a cooking gas and they haven’t used a cooking gas before. The use of firewood is harmful to the health and destroys the lungs but they do not have money to afford a cooking gas because the price has skyrocketed and the amount required to fill the gas has tripled. Everyone in the family is unemployed, they have to do menial jobs so they could eat. One of the children said he wants to learn how to make shoes but is unable to enroll due to a lack of money to pay for it.

The family was thrilled. The philanthropist was thanked by the Joseph family for making them happy and providing for them . They hoped that the donor would be protected, and God would show them love and grace every day of their lives. As we departed, the family was beaming and joyful praying for their donor.
