Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Okon family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to an Anonymous Donor in honor of their grandchild “M”, and this is the 585th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Okon family in Ikono. When we got to the compound, we did not see the owner of the house outside; we had to knock on their door, and Mrs. Okon came out. She gave us a receptive welcome and offered us to sit; we politely declined and told them what brought us to her house. Mrs. Okon was shocked and did not believe her eyes; she did not believe someone she did not know would donate a bag of rice to her for free without asking for anything back in return. She even asked us which political party we belonged to; we told her we did not belong to any political party, and she danced around the compound singing in her local dialect and thanking God for visiting her. Mrs. Okon stays in a one-room rented apartment; the house lacks basic amenities; they do not have electricity and she told us they take their bath outside because the public bathroom constructed by the landlord was destroyed when rain fell. She has no choice but to bathe outside and they share toilets. Mrs. Okon has 4 kids; they were not in when we visited. She said the eldest is working and the others are still going to school and on the verge of dropping out because of how bad the economy is.
Mrs. Okon partitioned a small space, and she uses it as her kitchen. She cooks with a small camp gas. Mrs. Okon is unemployed. She wishes she could start a business, but she does not have the money to do that. She said she would like to sell dried fish in the local market. She told us that her eldest son is the one taking care of her and paying her rent.
Mrs. Okon was thrilled and delighted to get the bag of rice from the donor. She told us that whenever she prayed to God, she would pray that God should bless the giver and meet their needs. As we drove away, she prayed for us. She was grateful that God had come to them and that they had received a present.
