Bag of Rice Project #586 -A visit to the Archibong family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Archibong family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 586th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Archibong in Ikono. When we got to the compound, we found them outside and they greeted us and they gave us a receptive welcome. Mrs. Archibong offered us ”ufofob”(dry gin) and we declined politely. We told them what brought us to their house; Mrs. Archibong screamed and did not believe. She was happy; she hugged the husband and said, We have what to eat now. The husband was so happy and offered to buy us what we drink; we told him not to worry that we are okay. The Archibong family lives in a one-room apartment. They told us their rent expired, and the landlord gave them 4 months grace to make the payment. The house lacks basic amenities; they have not been able to connect light to their house because they do not have the money to pay. The family is blessed with 3 kids and they are out of school because of their financial situation.

The Archibong family cooks at the back of their house; they do not have a kitchen. The Archibong family uses firewood to cook and the use of firewood in cooking is harmful to health and causes lung cancer. They have no other choice than to cook with it because they cannot afford cooking gas. Mr. and Mrs. Archibong are farmers, and they use that to feed the family. They told us that they also farm for people so that they would be able to eat.

The family was pleased that a stranger could bring them a bag of rice without even knowing their name. They asked the God to guide the giver and prayed for God to continue protecting, guiding, and providing for them in their time of need. As we drove off, the family appeared content and enthusiastic. They waved as we passed their house.
