Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ikot family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to Melissa Rae, this is the 587th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met the Ikot family in Ikono; the family was recommended to us by a friend. When we got to the compound, we did not find anyone outside; we had to call them the traditional way by shouting, “WHO IS HERE?” We did this because the house does not have a door. Someone came out and gave us a receptive welcome. They asked us why we are visiting them because they have not seen the face in the community before. We told them someone donated a bag of rice to them; they told us it was a prank, that how can someone give them a bag of rice without any strings attached and it is even a bag, not one derica of rice, that we are pranking them. They even asked us where the cameraman was, that he should come out. We told them we are not playing pranks on them; we brought the bag of rice out and said it is theirs that someone donated to them. The family was so happy and they started praying for the donor. The family stays in a one-room apartment; the house is built with mud, which is an ancient way of building in Africa. The roof of the house is leaking and can collapse at any time. The house lacks basic amenities; they do not have electricity in the house and also they practice open defecation because they are unable to pay to construct a modern toilet. They have to wake up as early as 5 am to take their bath. The family is blessed with 3 kids and they are out of school because there is no money for them to continue.
The Ikot family can’t afford cooking gas but has to resort to using firewood to cook; they are unable to afford cooking gas because of the amount a cooking gas goes for; it is expensive and they won’t be able to fill the gas even if they have one because of how expensive it is to fill a cooking gas. Mr. and Mrs. Ikot are farmers and they do this to fend for the family.
The family was so happy someone donated a bag of rice to them. They prayed that God will continue to bless the handiwork of the donor and God will promote it in every sphere of life. The family was happy as we drove away and they waved at us as we were passing.
