Bag of Rice Project #589 -A visit to the Okon family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Okon family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  The Marlow Family , and this is the 589th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

The Okon family was recommended to us by a friend. We met the family in Ikono. When we got to the compound, there was no one outside the house. We knocked on their door and they came out. They gave us a receptive welcome and they offered us a seat and we politely declined. Mr. Okon asked us our purpose of visit and we told them someone donated a bag of rice to them; the Okon was so shocked that someone could give them a bag of rice without asking for something in return.  The family was happy and shocked the bag of rice came with no strings attached. The Okon family lives in a one-room apartment and they are unable to pay their electric bill and also the house does not have a bathroom; they are made to take their bath outside the house. The Okon family is blessed with 3 kids, but they are unable to pay the children’s fees so they could be able to complete their education.

The Okon family cooks with a small cooking gas; they do their cooking in a shared space with their neighbor. Mr. and Mrs. Okon are unemployed and they engage in menial jobs to take care of the children. Mr. Okon was a security man in a secondary school in the community but it was burgled by thieves; this made him lose his job.

The family was so happy and they prayed for the donor, giving them a bag of rice in their time of need. They prayed God will continue to bless the donor and God will show up whenever they need help. They smiled and waved at us as we left their compound.
