Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Aniebet family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 593rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

As we drove past the Okon family, we sighted the Aniebiet family in Mbiaso village. When we got into the compound, there was no one outside so we had to knock the traditional way by saying who is in, the house lacks a door and we cannot knock. After one minute Mrs. Aniebiet came out and gave us a receptive welcome. She asked us what brought us to her compound because she has not seen these faces in the community before, we told her we do not stay in this community, that we have a bag of rice for her. She said it was a prank maybe we are shooting a prank video and want to prank her and she told us to start again and she will act well. We had to tell her it is not a prank and went inside the bus and brought a bag of rice out. She screamed, Jesus! and she did not believe what she is seeing, the children came out when they heard the mother scream and she broke the good news to them, they smiled and danced round. She asked us which of the politicians sent us to give them a bag of rice, that is it because the election is fast approaching and the politician is kicking off his/her campaign early because someone cannot give them a bag of rice without asking for something in return. We told her we were not sent by a politician that someone donated a bag of rice to them, she said this person doesn’t know me but chose to bless my family that God will bless and protect the donor. The family stays in a one room apartment, the house is a mud apartment which they inherited from their grandparents and they are unable to renovate the house. The house lacks basic amenities, they do not have a proper toilet, they still use pit latrine, which is dangerous to the health and causes disease. There is nothing like electric supply in the house, they do not have money to connect that. Also, the water they drink is not clean, they go to the stream to fetch water and the water is not clean because some people bath and wash their clothes there. The family is blessed with 7 kids and they are all out of school because the parents do not have enough money to allow them to continue their studies. The children are willing to continue their education but the parents do not have the resources to allow them to continue.
The Aniebiet family cooks at the back of their house, they do not have a proper space to call a kitchen they cook in an open space at the back of their house. When it starts raining, they improvise on where to cook. The family uses firewood to cook, which is harmful to one’s health, but they do not have money to afford cooking which is less harmful to their health. They are farmers and they operate on a subsistence basis, which is just to feed the family. They are unable to sell proceeds from the farm to their customers because they don’t produce enough, so they farm for the family alone and it is not enough considering the large family they have, and this is because of the pests attack on their farms and the inability to afford pest control chemicals. Productivity has been very low and they only farm for personal consumption.

The bag of rice that the donor donated to the Aniebiet family made them happy and they were excited. They prayed for God to bless the giver and provide for their needs at whatever time they prayed to Him. The family prayed for us as we drove out. They were happy they had gotten what to eat. Visits to families like this really examplifies the reason why we should keep doing this work. Mrs Aniebet was beyond happy and did not expect this at all. I’m so grateful to be a facilitator in these deliveries, and it is the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life so far.
