Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Ime family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 594th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Ime family in Mbiaso village. When we got to the compound, we only heard the voices of the children inside playing, so we had to knock locally because the house does not have a door. When we did the children came out and they gave us a receptive welcome by greeting us politely, one of the children went inside and called their mother, when the mother came out she greeted us in her local dialect and we responded, she offered us a sit so we could sit but we rejected it politely. She asked us what brought us to her compound and we told her we have a bag of rice for her. She did not believe her eyes, the children started moving close to the bus we came with and they saw rice and one of them whispered to the mum that there are bags of rice in the vehicle. She did not believe it, so we brought out one of the bags of rice and gave it to her. She asked us who sent us and we told her, someone donated the bag of rice to her. She was shocked that someone who did not know her would donate a full of rice to her without asking for something in return, asked if we were disguising for a politician contesting for the forthcoming election, we told her we were not sent by any politician. She did not believe her eyes and started praying for the donor, and the children danced round the compound. The Ime family stay in a one room apartment, the house is a mud house which is built with clay, the house lacks basic amenities, the roof of the house leaks and they practice open defecation, they don’t have access to good water, they go to the stream to fetch water. When we started talking to Mrs. Ime told us that she is a widow, that the husband died two years ago and she is saddled with the responsibility of taking care of the children. The family is blessed with 6 children and they are all out of school, they are unable to get basic education because the mother does not have enough to send them to school.
The Ime family cooks with firewood. Cooking with firewood is harmful to the health and it damages the lungs but the family are unable to get a proper cooking gas and they are left with no other option than to cook with firewood. The amount of cooking gas is too much and they hardly feed, so they prefer to use firewood in cooking rather than gas because of the price. Also, Mrs. Ime is a farmer, she does this on a subsistence basis to feed the family, she said when the husband was alive they operated the farm on commercial basis, since his demise she has to sell some portion of the land they have to feed the family and kept a little portion of the land she uses to farm. Also, she engages in some other menial jobs like weeding for people who have farms and also plants for them so that she can be able to make extra income.
Mrs Ime prayed for the donors, recounting her struggles as a widow raising six children and the burdens she has to carry daily. Today, through the kindness of another, she has—out of the blue, been blessed with answers to her prayers. She prayed for God to bless the hands that gave us this bag of rice. May they never know lack. Multiply their resources and surround them with love and favor. Let their own home overflow with peace and joy. She continued praying as we left.
