Bag of Rice Project #595 -A visit to the Udeme family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The following story is about the Udeme family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to  Cheryl Boyette  and Laura Johnson, and this is the 595th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Udeme family in Mbiaso village. When we got to the compound we met two children playing outside as they saw us they greeted us and one of them went to call their mother, it was not up to a minute the mother came outside and she gave us a receptive welcome and offered pointed at a bench in the compound for us to sit and we politely declined. She said she has not seen us before in the community and asked us what brought us to her compound or do we want to see the husband because the husband went to work. We told her we are here to give her a bag of rice. She didn’t believe it until we went to bring the bag of rice out of the car, when she saw it she started thanking God and praying. She now asked us which of the political party we belonged that she is ready to vote and campaign for us, we told her we were not sent by any politicians that someone donated the bag of rice to her, she said someone that don’t know her from anywhere gave her a bag of rice, she was so happy and said God has come to visit her. The family lives in a one room apartment, the house is a mud house and it’s on the verge of collapsing and they are unable to repair it in a proper way since they can’t afford a house built with blocks. The house is in a very bad state and they lack basic amenities, there is no electricity in the house, the roof of the house is leaking, they can’t get a proper zinc for the house because of the cost, they practice open defecation they are unable to get a modern toilet, they bathe outside because there is no bathroom for them and they go to the stream to fetch water, they are unable to get a good water to drink, the water from the stream is not good for them because most people go to the stream and wash their clothes there and all the dirt of the clothes get back into the stream, the water they drink is not neat and can lead to disease. The family is blessed with 2 kids and they haven’t started school yet.

The Udeme family do not have a proper kitchen, they cook at the back of their house, what they use in cooking is firewood which is harmful to the health and can lead to them having problems with their lungs because of the amount of smoke they inhale. They are unable to afford cooking gas because it is expensive, they said even if they get it the amount used in filling the cooking gas would be much compared to firewood they go into the bush to fetch and it doesn’t cost them anything. Mr. Udeme is a carpenter and he does that to fend for the family. At the time of our visit he was not around, we were told he went to work. The wife has a small grocery store and she does that to support the family.

The family was so happy someone donated a bag of rice to them. They prayed that God will continue to bless the handiwork of the donor and God will promote it in every sphere of life. The family was happy as we drove away and they waved at us as we were passing.
