Bag of Rice Project #599 -A visit to the Etim family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Etim family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 599th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Etim family in Mbiaso village, when we got to the compound we did not meet anyone outside, we had to knock  the traditional way which is to shout outside and speak in the local dialect, we did this  because the house did not have a door. When we did that we saw the mother and children come out. They gave us a receptive welcome. Mrs. Etim asked us what brought us to her house, that she has not seen this face before, we told her we are not from the community that we have something for her and she was surprised and eager to see what we have for her, we told her someone donated a bag of rice to her, she did not believe her ears. She was so happy and the children around her were happy. She asked if it was donated to her by a politician, that she is ready to vote for the person come 2027, we told her we were not sent by a politician, that someone donated it to her, she was surprised that someone she did not know from Adam could just give her a bag of rice, she prayed for the donor. The Etim family stays in a one room apartment, the house is a mud house which is on the verge of collapsing, but she has no choice than to live there because she does not have money to build a house with cement. The family is blessed with 3 kids and they are all out of school because there is no money for them to continue. The house lacks basic amenities, they do not have clean water they go to the stream to fetch and some people defecate in that same water and there is no electricity in their house, they have lived like that for years.

The Etim family do not have a proper kitchen to cook, they make use of firewood to cook and considering how harmful cooking with firewood is to the health they are at risk of having cancer. They are unable to afford cooking gas because of how expensive it is, they are left with no choice than to cook with it. Mrs Etim cooks palm fruit to fend for the family, she uses this to take care of the family, when we visited the husband was not in, she told us the husband is a farmer and that is what he does to fend for the family.

As we were about to leave Mrs. Etim offered us a seat but we politely declined. She wanted to offer us a drink, but she could not stop thanking and praying for the donor. They were so happy, they said the lord will continue to bless the donor and they would not know lack, God will remember them as they remembered her. She continued praying as we left and was smiling and jumping for joy as we left.
