Bag of Rice Project #60 -A visit to the Umoren family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Umoren family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Cat Neiheisel – In honor of all our employees at Neiheisel Steel Corporation. This is the 60th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader. They live in a rented two bedroom apartment. Mrs Umoren is a widow and she has 6 kids and her main occupation is farming. The family had just finished harvesting their cassava when we met them and all the children were involved in the preparation of the harvested crops. They usually just live off of what they harvested but this season recorded poor harvest for them.

When they have finished planting, the family switches occupations to seamstresses. I noticed some sewing machines in their house and Mrs Umoren explained that her and her younger daughter work with it but because they are not consistent, they do not have customers. This family has undergone a lot of hardship and has found ways to overcome them. They lost their dad 2 years ago and have not recovered from his death. Apart from the 3 children we met at home, they also have 2 kids serving on a full time mission.

The inside of the house

We met the family very busy working on their cassava harvest, they were so glad to see us and were even more happier when we explained our purpose for coming. Mrs Umoren was so grateful and explained to us that she did not have much in the house and that we were answers to her prayers by bringing this Rice in the exact time we brought it. We could see the happiness on their faces and left knowing we made an impact on their lives.
