Bag of Rice Project #600 -A visit to the Sam family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Sam family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 600th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Sam family in Mbiaso when we got to the compound we met people outside we exchanged pleasantries with them and they gave us a receptive welcome. We told them we have a bag of rice for them, they did not believe their eyes. They asked which of the politicians donated the rice to them, we told them we were not sent by any politician that someone donated the bag of rice to them. The family was so happy and they started praying for the donor. The family lives in a one bedroom apartment, the family lives in a mud house, which is on the verge of collapsing. The mud house at the back is already collapsing and needs repairs. They take their baths at the back of the house and they wake up as early as 5am to do this because they do not have a proper bathroom. They also defecate openly because there is no proper toilet, The house lacks basic amenities, they have not had electricity before, they do not have clean water, they go to the stream to fetch water, the water is not clean because people wash clothes there and others defecate inside the water. The family is blessed with 1 child.

The Sam family do not have a kitchen, they cook outside their house and they make use of firewood to cook. The use of firewood for cooking is harmful to the health, because they inhale the smoke from the firewood which can cause a terminal illness. They are left with no choice than to cook with firewood because they cannot afford cooking considering how expensive it is. Mrs. Nseobong Sam is a farmer, she does this to fend for her family and her only child, she uses this to train the child in school.

When we were leaving Mrs Nseobong Sam was praying for the donor and she was so happy because she has not eaten rice in a long time because of how expensive it is, she was so happy and prayed that God would bless the donor and provide for them in times of their needs, every doors that have been locked would be open for them. She continued praying as we left and told us to greet the donor. The family mood was elated as we left.
