Bag Of Rice Project #611 -A visit to the Aniekan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The following story is about the Aniekan family. Their bag of rice was donated thanks to TERRY SIMMONS, and this is the 611th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met the Aniekan family in Mbiaso village. When we got to the house we did not see anyone outside. We had to knock the traditional way by saying “Owo mi”- Who is here? Mrs. Aniekan came out and she gave us a receptive welcome. She apologised for keeping us waiting, she said she was at the backyard of the house. She asked us what brought us to her compound and we told her and we told her we have a bag of rice for her family. She was surprised, she was asking us if it was real and we told her yes. She was so happy and asked us if it was from a politician and we said no, she then asked who will just donate a bag  of rice to them without any strings attached, we told her someone donated it to her and is not asking for anything in return. She was so happy. The Aniekan family stays in a one room apartment, the house they live in is a mud house and the room of the house is leaking and the house lacks some basic amenities, they take their bath outside and also they practice open defecation which is not hygienic. The family is blessed with 4 kids and at the moment only 2 of the kids is in school, they are unable to fund the education of 4 kids.

The Aniekan family makes use of firewood for cooking. Cooking with firewood is harmful to the health and destroys important organs of the body. The family is unable to afford cooking gas. When we visited Mr. Aniekan was not in we were told he went to work, Mr. Aniekan is a mechanic and the wife is a hairdresser, they do this to fend for the family.

The family was so happy someone donated a bag of rice to them. They prayed that God will continue to bless the handiwork of the donor and God will promote it in every sphere of life. The family was happy as we drove away and they waved at us as we were passing.
