Bag of Rice Project #64 -A visit to the Akpan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Akpan family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Cat Neiheisel – In honor of all our employees at Neiheisel Steel Corporation. This is the 64th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family lives the outskirts of Uyo, Nigeria. They have 3 kids and live in a one bedroom apartment with a wooden enclosure in the front that doubles as their kitchen. The Akpans were recommended by their church leader and were a delight to meet and talk to. They also live in the same house with two of his nieces who they have taken in to help care for. They are sisters and they help out with the children and a general contribution to the house.

We were really happy to meet this family. Mr Akpan is a barber but due to the area he stays he charges less than 80 cents to cut a hair and his wife sells food in the mornings. She carries them around in a truck (an iron cart that she pushes by hand) and sells near a bank in the area. When we arrived at the Akpans residence, it was almost evening and the children were already bathed and doused in powder because of the hot weather so we decided to take their pictures with the bag of Rice.

The boys all bathed and powdered, ready for bed.

When we arrived at the Akpan’s house and told them why we were there, they were extremely happy. Everyone including their neighbors came in to congratulate them and the family was grateful for the Rice and thanked us constantly. They also wanted us to extend their thanks to those who donated to help them better their life. As we left this family I felt happy for the smiles on their faces and the hope that our visit seem to give to the family.
