Bag of Rice Project #65 -A visit to the Udoh family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Udoh family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Cat Neiheisel – In honor of all our employees at Neiheisel Steel Corporation. This is the 65th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by multiple persons. The Udoh family live in a residential area but they face some financial challenges that have led to them getting an eviction notice. The Udoh’s have 6 kids and as at the time of our visit none of them were at home and only 2 of the children stay at home with their parents and the rest are learning as apprentices in different skills. They live in a one room apartment which does not have a kitchen so they cook outside.

From those that recommended us to the family, they seemed in great need. Mr Udoh is a gardner and Mrs Udoh sells food both couples have had their business suffer greatly with Mr Udoh not having any work at all. This led to their not being able to pay for the rent and taking care of their families needs. Mrs Udoh cooks the meal she sells outside of their house and she uses firewood to do that. Here is a picture of where she cooks.

Kitchen to make her meals

When we came to the Udoh’s house there was no one at home and eventually Mrs Udoh came home to receive us. So she was the only one we met at home. Regardless of this small setback, she was very candid with us and told us how their family has been in need of assistance. And how she has not been able to cook and sell to people as she has lost her capital and that the bag of Rice will greatly assist her family to get back on their feet. She was very grateful for the food and when Mr Udoh came back later that evening he called to thank us and express his thanks to those who donated.
