Bag of Rice Project #67 -A visit to the Friday family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Friday family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Cat Neiheisel – In honor of all our employees at Neiheisel Steel Corporation. This is the 67th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader. Mrs Nsikak is a widow and she has 3 kids. We only met one of the kids at home. They live in a one bedroom apartment in the outskirts of Uyo, Nigeria. I was happy visiting this family as they received us very nicely.

Inside the house is a place they constructed as the kitchen, with wood and zinc. Mrs Friday is a trader and she sells Crayfish in a local market nearby. She wakes up very early in the morning to go buy the Crayfish and then goes to sell it. She has been widowed for more than 10 years. She has 3 children but only the youngest still stays with her. It has been difficult for their family as they have been trying to survive from her Crayfish business which does not sells as much as it used to.

Their Kitchen

This visit was done early in the morning so that we can meet Mrs Friday before she leaves for market. When we visited her and introduced ourselves and what we brought for her she was very happy and grateful for the Bag of Rice as she was just explaining her situation to her bishop the other day. She kept thanking us over and over again. We left the family knowing that the family were better off than they were before we came.
