Bag of Rice Project #68 -A visit to the Udofia family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Udofia family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Jane Bowers, Kimberly Walker, Kassi Jensen, Tabitha Diggs this is the 68th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader because they have been going through a rough time financially and were in need of help. The Udofia family were a lovely family to visit. They have 2 daughters Uwakfon and Mercy. They live in a one room house and share other utilities such as toilets and bathroom with other families in their compound. We met Mrs Udofia and her two daughters doing laundry by hand in front of their home.

The family cooks their meal outside in the open and during rainy season, they bring they use a kerosene stove to cook inside. Mr Udofia is a welder for a factory that is outside the city so he is rarely at home for weeks at a time because of the travel distance that it will take to get to work. Mrs Udofia is a food vendor and cooks local delicacies then pushes it around in a handcart till she sells all of it. Even though Mr Udofia stays away from home most of the time, his salary still is not enough to take care of his family and that was why they were recommended to us.

The Udofias were a lovely family to visit, they had no idea that we were coming and they were so grateful when we gave them there bag of Rice. Mrs Abigail Udofia told me that the Rice will be so beneficial to their family as they don’t have any food stored and always go out to buy food when they need to make a meal. She was so grateful for the Rice and thanked those who donated to get her the bag of Rice. We left this family knowing that they have something that will make them less worried and a little more hopeful for the future.
