Bag of Rice Project #70 -A visit to the Ekpe family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Ekpe family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Baughman Family this is the 70th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader. We had to take directions from a lot of people because they lived in a village with no organised address system. We eventually found their place their place because our guide mentioned the name of his church and he was the only person known from his church living in that area. The Ekpes were a wonderful family to meet. They have four kids but we only met one of the four kids at home. They live in an uncompleted building that has been roofed so that they can move into it.

Front view of their house

One thing before I go back to the Ekpes, The man in the picture above is a carpenter working on the Ekpe’s house. His name is Usoro, we spoke to him as we came in and but we did not know we will met him again but we did ( you will read about him in a future bag of rice story). So Mr Ekpe is a mason and the house they’re staying in is not theirs but a family member let them stay there while Mr Ekpe works on the house. His wife Mrs Ima sells fruits at a local market. They cook in one of the rooms in the house and use kerosene to cook.

Their kitchen

This family was in real need of help. They have a housing problem which they have found a temporary fix for, and Mr Ekpe has not had a paying job in a while. So they were very very grateful that we came to visit them and we brought a bag of Rice for them. They thanked us over and over again and we want to extend their thanks to the Baughman Family that donated. And we know that this family will be better than before we met them.
