Bag of Rice Project #72 -A visit to the Akpan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Akpan family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Barb Przybylski, Michelle Swartzentruber, Pamela Gabel, this is the 72nd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This special family was recommended to us by their church leader. The Akpans have 2 kids and live in a rented one room apartment and they do not have a kitchen or a bathroom but they cook outside on a cement slab and share a bathroom with the rest of the tenants in the compound. We only met the wife at home because we came to visit them during the afternoon.

In this part of Nigeria, people use motorcycles to carry people around and charge them for it and that is what Mr Akpan does. His wife Ekemini tends to the kids and stays at home. One of the kids we met is named Nsikak. Nsikak was initially annoyed that we disturbed his playtime with other kids and refused to sit still or let go of of the stick in his hands. After I spoke to him and negotiated with him for a little bit of his time, he agreed to take some shots for us. The Akpans were a lovely family to visit and we were happy we met them.

When we spoke to the Akpans and explained why we came, they were happy and excited and thanked us very much. Even as I helped carry the Rice inside the house, I could see that they did not have much and were really struggling. I would like to extend the gratitude of the family to those who donated the bag of Rice to them. We loved the Akpan family, the energy of Nsikak and we felt honored to visit and share with their spirit.
