Bag Of Rice Project #8 – A visit to the Mary family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person up to a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive.

The Following story is about the Mary family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Megan Wells this is the 8th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We heard about the Mary family through a church leader that heard about our program and recommended her to us. We set out to visit the family and met them living in an uncompleted building where they only roofed one of the rooms and were living in that part of the house. She is a widow who lost her husband last year and was left to cater for her 3 kids. The kids are all young and she has been having a difficult time taking care of them.

The House

From what we heard and from what we saw, we found that Mrs Mary is a super strong woman. She takes care of all her children and also looks for ways to provide for them. She does not have a skill but she can farm so she walks around all day looking for people whom she can work for on their farm for a pay that is nothing but helps in taking care of her kids. They use one part of their house and the rest of the house is unprotected even the kitchen. which is just in an open part of the house. They cook with firewood and cant afford to use any other source.

The Kitchen

We met Mrs Mary to give her her bag of rice and after explaining who we are and why we came to see her, she was overcome with emotions and had to fight to hold back tears. Africans don’t cry easily and she was brought to the point where she held back tears. She is a strong woman and we admired her courage and hope this act of kindness supports and grows her to do all she can for her kids.
