Bag of Rice Project #81 -A visit to the Okon family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Okon family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Connie Peach this is the 81st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader. And for the record we probably broke the Guinness record for most times lost in a journey. And when we eventually found their house, it turned out that we were almost at the right place but asked for directions and got turned around. They live in an interior village off Uyo, Nigeria. They have no address system and use landmarks to give directions hence our attempt to break the world record.

The Okon family live in an uncompleted building and and live in it while they complete it. The Okons are farmers and they live off of what they cultivate and mostly cultivate cassava. They have 1 kid and have another family member that stay with them to help out in the farm and in the house.

It was a delight meeting this family, after the many people we asked to get to this family it felt great meeting them. They were a delightful couple to meet and welcomed us to their village. They have a cute baby, her name is Angela and she did not cry when we carried her. When we told them why we came and what we brought for them, they were very happy and expressed their gratitude for the bag Of Rice. We were so happy to have visited this family and left feeling that we made a difference in their lives.
