Bag of Rice Project #83 -A visit to the Udofia family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Udofia family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Mary Jane Helms, Anita Gross, Jane Bowers this is the 83rd bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader. They live in a village outside of Uyo, Nigeria. It was a long journey from Uyo to the village where they stay. We met Mr Udofia and his sons, fixing the sole bicycle the family uses when they want to go for long distances. The Udofias live in a one bedroom apartment and share other utilities with other tenants in the compound. Mr Udofia has two sons and he is separated from the kids mother who lives in another city so he raises them alone.

Mr Udofia is currently unemployed, he says he has been looking for jobs for a long time now. His lack of work has been making it hard for his boys to feed but it has also made the family tougher and more self sufficient. He allowed us to take a picture of the inside of his house and it showed us the state the family is living in. Everything they have is in the room they live in and there is little space for much else.

This family was pleasantly surprised when they heard of why we visited them. Mr Udofia has been unemployed for a while and only gets funds by doing the odd job from time to time. The family has been going through some tough times and this bag of Rice meant so much them and we can see it on their faces. This family was inspiring. A father and his two boys, reminded me of my own family except they have it tougher. The family was so grateful for the food and I felt happy for them.
