Bag of Rice Project #85 -A visit to the Okon family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Okon family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Merriann Will this is the 85th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We met this family through their church leader. They live in the outskirts of Uyo, Nigeria. The Okons live in a one room apartment and share other utilities like bathroom and kitchen with other tenants. Mr Okon is a widow and he has a daughter. But because of the hardship that has befallen him, his daughter could no longer stay with him and has to stay with his older sister. So we met only Mr Okon at home.

Front view of his house

Mr Okon uses a part of his room to cook and built a cabinet to store the cooking utensils when he is not using them. He is currently unemployed and is a skilled carpenter. He is constantly going out looking for jobs to do around the neighborhood and is rarely at home. He does not have enough money to take care of his daughter and that is why she does not stay with him.

His Kitchen

Mr Okon was overjoyed when we told him why we came and what we brought for him. He told us that he needed it and has been without food in his house for months. It has been difficult for him and the little money he gets, he spends on food outside. He thanked those who donated and prayed that God will replenish and bless them. I pray earnestly that he will get a job so that he can get income and bring his daughter home. We left his house knowing that life will be better for him and that we have helped him solve one of his biggest issue.
