Bag of Rice Project #87 -A visit to the Umoren family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Umoren family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Margaret Colucci this is the 87th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader. The Umoren family are a wonderful young couple. They live in a one room apartment at the outskirts of Uyo Nigeria. We did not meet Mr Umoren at home but we met his wife. Who is heavily pregnant and was so delighted to see us. It took us a while to locate the Umorens house and after many twists and turns we finally found them.

Due to the small space of where the Umorens live, they cook inside their home in a small corner. The Umorens are young and got married a couple of years ago. Mr Umoren sells home made paints and also doubles up as a house painter himself. It has been hard for him to take care of his family, considering that he does not get enough orders for his work. So considering there poor financial state and the incoming baby, we got recommendations to visit and help out the family.

We met Mrs Umoren at home, cooking Rice that she bought from outside at a very expensive rate. And when we describe who we were and why we came to visit her, she was visible happy. She was grateful and thanked us repeatedly. This family is about to welcome a new born into the world and we can see that Mr Umoren is trying his best to take care of the family and I’m happy that people donated to help this family be better than where they were and save money to be used where they really need it.
