Bag of Rice Project #88 -A visit to the Obianime family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Obianime family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Margarita Justice this is the 88th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended to us by their church leader. This family has passed through a lot and has come to my attention more than once since this project began. The Obianimes are a group of 3 siblings. They live in a one room apartment and share utilities like bathroom and toilet with other tenants. The parents of the Obianimes live in another city and are struggling financially and have left their kids to fend for themselves.

Front view of their house

They live in a very low cost area in Uyo, Nigeria and because of the rent and the room they are staying, they dont have a kitchen and had to construct a zinc structure to cook in. Two of the Ofonimes are in college while the youngest one just finished high school. All the Ofonimes have jobs to try and take care of themselves. The oldest Chantelle works at a local hotel and goes to work their every night, the two brothers work at a local gas station. The Ofonimes mostly struggle to take care of themselves and often times find themselves asking for help from people. This family has managed to survive with the little they had and that was why we were happy to visit them.

Their kitchen

This family is an example of strength and courage and we were happy to visit with them. When we told them of why we were visiting and what we brought for them, they were delighted. They did not have food in the house and were grateful that we thought of them and visited them. They thanked those who donated for their benefit. We felt especially good for this family, to be so young and have such burdens has not been easy for them. And I know what this gift of a bag of Rice will do in their lives and how it will simplify and save costs for them. I felt happy knowing that we left them happier and better than when we met them.
