Bag of Rice Project #89 -A visit to the Udoku family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Udoku family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Sarah Allen this is the 89th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This family was recommended by a local village head. The Udoku family is another example of strong women doing the most to help their family. Mrs Linda Udoku was married but after two kids, her husband just left them. The Udokus live in a rented one bedroom apartment and they share the utilities with other tenants.

They cook in a separate wooden shed where they cook. They use a kerosene stove to make their meals. Mrs Udoku works as a teacher at a local school and struggles to use what she makes to feed and take care of her kids. As at the time we came she has been owed salary for 2 months. To make extra money she organizes after school classes for kids at her school. Life has not been easy for them but they have been surviving.

I don’t know why someone in his right mind will abandon a family as beautiful as this and I don’t even want to understand why. This family was wonderful to meet and Mrs Udoku’s kids James and Anna were very polite and nice kids. When we told Mrs Udoku who were are and what we brought for her, she was overjoyed. I looked into where they cooked and could see that she didn’t have any food there at all. I don’t know what they intended to eat that evening but I know the relief in her eyes was borne from the fact that they now had something that will last a while for them. She thanked those who donated and I know that they needed this boost. I still feel like my life has changed doing this project in ways that I may not even fully realize. The happiness I feel from seeing people feel happiness is a constant blessing I thank God for every morning.
