Bag of Rice Project #90 -A visit Akpan family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Akpan family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Cathy Wilt this is the 90th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

We visited this wonderful family at night, partly because that was when majority of the family will be back and partly because we made a lot of deliveries that day. This Akpan family lives in Uyo, Nigeria. They live in a rented one room apartment and share other utilities with the other tenants living in the same compound. Mrs Akpan is a widow and she has 6 kids.

They do not have a kitchen so they cook in a wooden shed outside. They use firewood to cook as that is the cheapest means of fuel they can afford. The Akpans are a humble and hardworking and everybody in the family contributes in the growth of the family in some way or the other. Mrs Akpan is a trader and sells Groundnut and Corn and all her kids help her in selling it.

Their Kitchen

We were happy to meet this family as we were referred to them by their village head. They have been having difficulties feeding and taking care of themselves. The family was grateful to see us and Mrs Akpan was particularly happy with the bag of Rice. She kept thanking us as she did not expect it at all. I felt happy seeing this genuine happiness on their faces and I know the food will be beneficial to their family.
