Bag of Rice Project #91 -A visit to the John family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the John family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Amy Freeman Family this is the 91st bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This wonderful family lives in Uyo, Nigeria. They were recommended to us by their village head. The Johns have 3 kids Philip, Goodnews and Faith. They live in a rented one room apartment and share utilities with the other tenants. We met them at night and the 3 boys were doing their school assignments with their mom’s torchlight. We did not meet Mr John at home but the warmth that this family projected to us was enough to make our day.

Front view of their house

To cook, Mrs John has to leave her house to another room where everybody cooks. Then when she finishes with the cooking she will now carry it back to her own house for them to eat. Mrs John sells kerosene in front of her house and her husband is a mason but he is currently unemployed at the moment. Seeing the kids do their assignment from the single source of light in their house was heartbreaking and I knew we were in the right place to help out this family.

We were so happy to meet the Johns, especially the 3 boys Phillip, Goodnews and Faith. It was a pleasure to meet them and talk to them for a bit. Mrs John was so happy with our visit and was grateful for the bag of Rice. She thanked those who donated and wished blessings upon them. I am continually touched by the people who donate to this project and will like to extend my thanks to them. And to the special kids who donated to this family, Phillip, Goodnews and Faith are especially grateful for this help and the whole family appreciate your gift and sacrifice.
