Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Ben family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Gerald Abbott this is the 94th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
We met this wonderful family through their village head. The Ben family live in Uyo, Nigeria in a rented uncompleted building. Because of the low cost of where they stay, they share utilities like toilet and bathroom with other neighbors. The Bens have 5 kids but we only met 2 kids at home and Mr Ben had also gone to work. The Bens were a nice family to visit.
The Bens use one of the uncompleted rooms as a kitchen and use that room to cook their meals . Mr Ben works as a keke driver and keke is the name that Nigerians have given to the tricycle which people use as the cheapest mode of transport. Mrs Ben sells a local delicacy called Akara but only in the morning. Combined the Bens don’t make enough to take care of their whole family or move to the better place,
The way Mrs Ben’s face lit up when we told her who we were and why we came, made me feel very happy. The two kids we met were very nice to us (George and Alice) They were so happy and grateful for the bag of Rice and thanked those who donated. We saw what this gift meant to them. With the looming recession the bag of Rice will go very far in helping this family prepare for it. We left knowing we left them better than when we came.
