Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. The Following story is about the Jumbo family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Brenna Hedstrom this is the 97th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.
This family was recommended to us by a friend. The Jumbo family was a special family for us to meet. They live in Uyo, Nigeria in a rented one bedroom apartment and share utilities with other neighbors in the compound. The Jumbos have 5 kids, including a very new addition to their family. We did not meet Mr Jumbo as he had gone out to look for work.
The place where the Jumbos stay did not include a kitchen so they had to build a shed opposite their house and they cook from there. Mr Jumbo fixes tiles for houses and everyday he leaves the house to look for houses he can help in their construction so that he can offer his services to them. This method is not usually successful and he ends up not getting jobs and that means he can not provide for his family. So that has put this wonderful in a position where they can not afford to eat 3 times a day.
When I heard of this family and some of the special circumstances they face, I was excited to meet them. It took us a long drive to get to them and when we finally met with Mrs Jumbo and told her why we came and what we brought for them she was very grateful and happy. They were pleasantly surprised and it felt nice to see the genuine smile on their faces. They were grateful for those who donated for them to have this bag of Rice and I hope this will lift and support them in this trying times. We left this family knowing that we left them happier than we met them.
