Bag of Rice Project #99 -A visit to the Obi family

Learn how you can be apart of helping people who are in need with our A Thrifty Mom Bag of Rice Campaign. In 2016 we started helping a young man named Ikechukwu from Nigeria. Summer of 2019 we were able to visit his family in Aba, Nigeria. While there we saw widespread poverty and lack of basic needs. We would like to invite you to help meet one of those basic needs, by providing Nigerian families with rice. This gift will feed a large family for a few months, or a single person a year. It also reminds them they are loved, and brings most of them to tears… as a full bag of rice is one of the most generous gifts they will ever receive. You can also read about other families we have been able to bless here.

The Following story is about the Obi family, their bag of rice was donated thanks to Lisa Anderson this is the 99th bag of rice our program has been able to give away thanks to generous donations.

This special family was recommended to us by their community leader. The Obi family lives i n Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. They live in a one rented one bedroom apartment and had been facing some financial issues and that was why they were recommended to us. Mrs Obi is a widow and has a son whose name is Kingsley. We did not meet Kingsley at home but we met only his mom and she was initially skeptical of our visit until I took out time to explain our mission to her house.

On speaking to Mrs Obi we discovered that her son was suffering from a mental illness and the search for some medical help has drained her savings and made her lose her job. She has really been living off of doing odd jobs for people to get money to take care of her son and make sure he gets better. The leader who recommended her to us helped us to understand that their situation has been very serious and that was why she was recommended to us.

Mrs Obi asked a lot of questions about us when we met her. Because she was surprised that we could just pick her from among all the people in her compound and gift her a bag of Rice. She was very shocked but happy and grateful about the food and prayed that those who donated for her to get the food. After answering her questions, she discovered that we were from the same tribe and then she really spoke to me about how grateful she was. She is an example of what length mothers will go to make sure their kids were doing better. And I know that Kingsley has a mother that cares for him and we left there home knowing that we have lifted Mrs Ob’s spirits to keep being awesome for her kid.
