Embracing the fact that I am NOT a spelling bee champion….

spellingbee

Many of  my long time readers know that this is a topic I have addressed before.  But with new readers everyday it looks like this is a subject I need to talk about again.  This comment was left on my Spreading a Little Love post.  My family  and I where  gone all weekend to Salt Lake City to visit family.  I wrote this post at 1am after a long day and yes it was not perfect.  Learning to juggle writing a blog and putting my family first is hard.  I wish I had more hours in the day and could have more time for both… but I will ALWAYS choose a poorly written post IF it means I was able to spend the day creating memories with my loved ones.

This was the  comment  today….

I admire your generosity and your blog. However, may I say that if you want to be taken seriously as a writer, you need to rid your writing of grammatical errors. In this post as in many, you misuse the plural and the possessive (family’s vs. families, Sundays vs. Sunday’s), misspell words (companys, over whelming, maxim, weather), omit words (“see how I could it,” “but let face it), and misplace commas (“I love to watch programs on TV, that”). Good writing is the key to be taken seriously on-line. You’re obviously a smart woman; make sure your readers know it!

My first reaction is to be totally embarrassed ….and yes a little hurt too.  But instead,  I attempt to use this as a way to learn or grow.    When I started this blog it was not only to help my friends and family save money, but to face one of my biggest fears…. trying to hide the fact that I have a mild form of dyslexia.   But I did not want that to hold me back from helping others.  SO spelling and grammatical errors WILL be a common thing on my blog.

As a little girl and still as an adult I often feel “stupid” and a bit angry that I can’t  learn the same as others. My brain does not see things the same way as many of you….I really can’t see the misspelled words.  My brain mixes them all up.

The only thing I can say is we all face this life with a different set of talents ( spelling and writing is not one of mine).  If I was to focus on all the things I CAN”T do well, then I would never be able to find the joy in the things I can do well.   So if you see a misspelled word on my site…feel free to let me know, I will be happy to change it.  Or just remember that I am a busy Mom of 4 writing a blog for my friends and family to help them save money….far from professional …. and I am learning to be OK with that.
