Grow your own green onions ~ DIY FAIL

My friend was telling me how to grow  green onions.  She said that if you  put them in a glass of water, and give them sunlight they will grow.  When you need green onions, snip them off with a pair of scissors and they will regrow.  Which means you never have to buy green onions again.   I was in LOVE with this idea and was eager to try it out.

So about a month ago I bought  a bundle or green onions.  Came home and put them in a glass of water, and was excited to know I would never have to buy green onions again.  The next morning I woke up to  limp green onions flopped over the side of the glass.  I figured they would perk up and were just in shock or something.  I gave them new water, and even added a little miracle grow safe for table veggies…. and waited for them to “spring back”.

Well I waited and waited, and they just looked worse each day… and then they started to smell.  The smell was awful, it was like a dirty gym sock full of onions in the corner of my kitchen.  I finally gave up, dumped them out…. and the smell that came out of the glass literally make me dry heave.   I am thrifty and love the idea of free green onions for life…. but I admit defeat and am ready to chalk this one up to a huge DIY FAIL!

Lol. Did the same think. WAY to much water. only the roots need to touch the water. and use a glass you can’t see through.

  2. the exact same thing happened to me…..am gonna try again though. The smell is nauseating but I changed the water every 2-3 days……and growing the celery on Pinterest really works. Mine is almost ready to put in pot to grow!

Are you serious? I would take this down if I were you. They aren’t going to grow if they’re already grown! You use the greens then put the white parts in an inch or two of water and the green parts will regrow. If you don’t use up all the green…they get droopy! Don’t make people think this is a bad idea because you made a mistake…this is a great way to save money and fun for kids to learn about.
