It is no secret that I love to use coupons, but you may not know that I am a little scared to just approach a total stranger in the store and talk to them about coupons. Why, well I am just a big chicken I guess and do not want to bother people. Or come off as the weird coupon lady 🙂
So a few weeks ago I was shopping at Albertsons and the cutest little couple passed by me in the store. The older gentleman, turned around and started walking back towards me. He gave me a big smile and said, ” Here I am sure you will know what to do with this” He then handed me a catalina coupon for $3 off a $30 purchase. I was so excited, but told him that he should use it and explained it was like free money. I had a good chat with him and he insisted that I use the coupon. I told him that he totally made my day, and I was so grateful for his random act of kindness. He then wanted to show me a picture of his “pride and joy” he pulled a photo of Joy dish soap out of his wallet, and the word pride….. I could not help but giggle as he chuckled at his own joke.
I thanked him again, and then they were off to finish their shopping. It made me really think about how I was raised. In a small farming town we knew all our neighbors, waved at every passing car and always made small talk with people even if we did not know them. Just the fact that they were in our town made them worth talking too. Now with cell phones, texting and our fast pace lives it becomes all to easy to put our blinders on and forget we are all part of the community. And more importantly the kindness and warmth behind a simple Hello.
Some of you know the Sweet little Grandpa in the photo above? If you do make sure you tell him that he totally made my day 🙂
