We’re looking forward to trying Meridian’s movie night in the park…The kids are old enough this year to brave it that late.
Also, for a fun cleaning idea, we did a night where we were trying to teach them that it can be fun to work together. We put them in teams (randomly selected) and tied their arms together, and they each drew a “job” to work on. One pair got bathrooms, one got kitchen floors, and one got garbages. It was fun to see how everyone was cranky before we began, but all were happy after!
Obviously not something you could do every week, but it was nice to shake it up a bit that time!

We are going to visit one new park a week this summer! The cities in our area have a Park & Rec guide and we’ll take turns choosing each one to visit. Pack a picnic lunch or snack and…voila! a new adventure every week. I’m really looking forward to this!

I sign my kids up for the library summer reading program and we read. I also take the kids to free local events ie. spray parks, library events, crafting, and building at lowes. We go to the beach. Play on the slip n slide. We also take a walk/bike ride to the elementary school and play on the playground. Depends on the day I give the kids a choice make them feel independent.

This summer will be filled with a few different things for my children to keep busy and have fun too. First is that our public school offers a variety of programs for free over the summer (runs Mid-July to Mid August) to keep the kids minds fresh and active. It runs Monday through Thursday in the morning with transportation provided (many public schools do this but now is the time to find out because these programs fill up quick). The second is our local library offers daily age appropriate activities for the kids. About 80% are completely free and the rest may cost up to $5 per child for the activity. They have story telling, movies, puppet shows, art programs, and soooooo much more. Another great thing going on this summer in our town is that almost all of our local movie theaters offer free kids movies (days depend on the theater) but usually start at 11AM-12PM.

We do a lot of library events, trips to the park, time at the pool, etc. We will also build in time for learning (reading, writing stories, math facts). My kids love crafts, so I’m sure we’ll try to be creative, using materials we have on hand. They love chalk and anything with water!

Every Friday during the summer, I invite the kids of a church family over for the day. My kids look forward to that day when they will be able to play with their church friends and the Moms are grateful to have the day off. The cost of lunch is helped by the gift of hotdogs and buns left over from the church Memorial Day bar-b-que.
