Growing up we canned EVERY YEAR. We canned just about everything you could think of, hundred of jars of fruit and vegetables were preserved then enjoyed all year long. Even when I was little I had a job to do, as part of the canning. Mom made sure all my brothers and sisters knew how to can. I admit I grew to HATE canning as a teenager. I would have much rather been out playing with my friends. BUT now that I am grown I am so glad my Mom took the time to teach me these skills.
I have never canned with my own kids… but this year I decided it was time to teach them what my Mom taught me. I was worried they might give me a hard time and not like canning. I was very happy to see they LOVED it, every step of the way they were smiling. Skinning, slicing, putting them in jars and even processing them. Made me happy to see how much they enjoyed it… we only did 29 quarts and 8 pints. But we enjoyed it and I am looking forward to canning with them again next year.
