About Us I am a stay at home mom with three wonderful kids. I have been married for over 8 years to my best friend. I am head over heals in love with him. He always supports my crazy "thrifty adventures". We have a lot of fun together. I was raised on a small dairy farm. Where I learned very young, the value of hard work and how to be thrifty in all areas of life. Growing up our meals were made from scratch. Only on special occasion would we get name brand cereal, chips, or any other fancy treats. Now that I am a Mom with my own budget, the basic foods always comes first. I too make most of our meals from scratch and take pride in feeding my family a well balanced healthy diet. I enjoy seeing how far I can make our budget stretch, and when I take the time to match sales with coupons I am able to get all those "fun & fancy" items that would other wise be out of my budget. Being thrifty has always been a way of life for me, but it has also become a real joy.

Price matching

This is a post KC Penny Pinchin Mama did and asked if I would like to share it with my readers. I thought it had to great info  about Target and Walmart….thanks for passing it along.

I received an email from reader, Dawn recently, and here is what she said:

When I tried to price match at Walmart yesterday the cashier told me that they will no longer price match items from the Price Chopper ad if the ad states that the price is “with Chopper Shopper card”. She said the policy changed 30 days ago or so. Have you heard about this? She wasn’t very friendly and I didn’t really press the issue (it was 5 pm on a Friday evening). This isn’t my normal shopping time but I only need a couple of items. Anyway, I didn’t end up buying the items and was a bit frustrated. I know Target’s policy says that they don’t have to match items that require a store card. Just thought I would see what you know, if anything. Thanks again for everything you do.

Dawn actually contacted the manager of the store where she shops and was told that they DO price match and this clerk was in error. So now she knows that she should do the next time.

Never be afraid to speak to a manager when it comes to price matching. Sometimes, the clerks are not 100% sure of what they should or should not do. Right now, in Kansas City, you can find 3 stores who price match: Walmart, Kansas City and Price Chopper.

Walgreens is currently doing some testing in local markets, but it does not appear Kansas City is one of those areas.

Before you can price match, you need to know the basics, which apply to all stores:

Think twice

One of our readers, who also works at a drug store sent us a perspective on the other side of the counter. Since Sarah is sick this week I thought I would take control of things this week.;)
I think that couponing is great and I save a TON of money every month, plus I am able to stock up on things will they are on sale.  I work at a local drug store and there are a few coupon ladies that are GREEDY and ruin it for the rest of us who don’t go over board.  We try to order enough items so that everyone who wants the product can take advantage of the coupons, company benefit coupons (changed program name to protect the writer) and the great deals on sales.  But there are a few that think they need ALL of the items and then when we run out are upset.

Here are a few examples:

1) A lady came in and put all the Vaseline Infusion lotion in here cart; she cleared the shelf.  I am guessing she had 10-12 of them in there.  She then finds one of the employees and asks if we have anymore.  This employee tells her no.  The customer’s comment “well, my mom wanted some” and she was really upset we didn’t have more.  I guess I look at it that she should have taken a couple for her, a couple for her mom and left the rest for other customers who may want them.  She was so greedy she could not even share the 10-12 she had with her mom.  I mean, really, how many lotions do your REALLY need at one time.

2) A lady bought several of the Robisussin to go 2 packs.  She came back a couple days later and wanted more but we were out.  She said “my mom didn’t get any”  I guess I look at these two examples as why can’t she not be GREEDY and give a couple to her mom.

3) The other night we had a lady come in and purchased some things.  Among them was Crest toothpaste.  She used a coupon and company benefit coupon but because she used a P & G company benefit coupon it did not spit out another company benefit coupon.  Then she gets mad at us saying we did it wrong.  We tried explaining to her why it did not give her a second company benefit coupon.  She gets in a huff and leaves.

It is getting so out of control that our manager is now limiting customers to two unless we have a huge quantity of them.  She is also limiting to two transactions per customer so that people like the ones mentioned above will not take all of the product and leave nothing for other customers.  This is more so when we are really busy, compared to a Sunday night when the store is pretty quiet.

Please pass on these points:

1) Don’t get mad at the employee if your company benefit coupon does not print out because you used too many manufacture coupons or a company benefit coupon from the company you already used a company benefit coupon.  We do not make up these rules, the manufactures do.

2)  Don’t be greedy in the amount of items you get.  Other customers want to take advantage of the company benefit coupons and free stuff too.  Although we order plenty of items to satisfy everyone, if one person takes them all we cannot satisfy only one person.

3)  On freight day do NOT ask the employees to go through all the totes for the products you want or hoover over us while we are putting out the merchandise.  We have literally hundreds of products to put out and only one day to do so.  You can wait, just like everyone else, for the items to be put on the shelf.  Sorry if you miss the items you want, now you know how everyone else feels when you take everything and no one else gets any.

4) Be organized when you come in.  When you are up at the register it is NOT the time to go through your coupons, deciding which items need to be purchased in which transaction and making us return something, only to ring it up again because it did not print out the company benefit coupons you were expecting.

I am sorry this sounds so harsh, but maybe if you let these couponers know then they will think twice about how they act.  I can literally tell you hundreds of stories that happen everyday in retail and the way these people treat us, the majority of them are NOT nice.  Many of our couponers do subscribe to your website, as I have asked them where they go for their information.

Thank you

It’s Matt again. I really think it is important to remember to always be – Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent.
For those younger moms or guys who didn’t go into scouting… that’s the Boy Scout Law. And since I’m an Eagle scout I think I can post it.
If a cashier likes you and you follow the Scout Law then they will do things that go beyond just being a cashier. We get alot of questions like how did you get that, or why are they so nice to you. Well it’s because Sarah follows the above Law. Then cashiers, and store managers will go out of their way for you too.

Target coupon policy!!!

Target400

Thanks to one of my readers Jenny who sent me this link.  I was so happy to see that Target has taken a huge step and posted a coupon policy on their web site. In the past we had to email corporate and ask for an email copy, and even then some of the stores would not honor it being that it did not come from there official site.  So here is the link, I suggest you all print it and keep a copy of this in your coupon binder.

• Target accepts one manufacturer coupon and one Target coupon for the same item (unless prohibited)
• Super Target coupons can be used in any Target store if the store carries the item
• We gladly accept valid internet coupons

Because of the variety of coupons available to our guests, we do have some guidelines for how coupons can be redeemed at Target.

When accepting coupons, we use the following guidelines:

• We accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued coupons and manufacturer-issued.
• We’ll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.
• Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
• We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
• We can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
• All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you’re checking out.

Readers question

I got this email over the weekend,

Just wanted to let you know that one of my local Albertsons stores is no longer accepting walgreens catalinas . Just wanted to let anyone know ahead of time so they aren’t surprised when they try to use one. They said they haven’t been taking them for months, which is interesting because I have used them there in the past few months and just a week ago. That said, they said they are losing money on them and haven’t been getting reimbursed, so I understand. I was just wondering if you have heard of any other albertsons stores that are no longer accepting Walgreen’s catalinas.

As of 4/03/09 Alberstons officially stopped taking competitors coupon, this included Walgreens register rewards.  My local store stopped right away but I get emails all the time telling me their  store will still take them.  So just in case you did not know, they are not suppose to take them any longer.  But here is the GOOD NEWS, since they stopped taking them they now have  double coupons more often.  It think it was a great switch!

COUPON POLICY – Local Stores UPDATE 3/11

Please note that each state, each store can differ on  store coupon policy, and they can change from week to week.  These changes apply to my local stores, please check your own stores to see if they have changed too.  I have put this weeks changes in red. Updates as of 3/11/09

I get a lot of questions about coupons, and company policy.  So this week I called around, and talked to the Customer Service in each store asking them what their coupon policy’s are.  I must warn you most cashier have no idea what the coupon policy is in their store.  It is so important to be informed, and be an educated coupon shopper.  Some stores are a little more coupon friendly than others.  If you get a crabby cashier that acts like you are robbing the store, for using coupons.  Remember the store DOES get paid back for your coupons from the manufacturer. A coupon is just like paying with cash.  It just comes from the manufacturer, not you.

Please remember company policy differ from region to region. They may change at any time. You need to always check with your stores management,, educate yourself, and  write down their name, the day to spoke with them.  Many times you will know the stores coupon policy’s better than the cashiers.
Be kind, save money and have fun doing it!

Always check before you buy

A quick lesson I would like to pass on. Many of you who are new to “couponing” have emailed me with stories of some cashiers or stores not taking coupons one day, but accepting them the next. This can be very frustrating, and emotionally draining. But I want to give some words of encouragement. “It depends on the day”. Yes it doesn’t amount to much, but point taken is that each person has their own ideas about coupons. It depends on who is counting the money behind the desk at your local store, or which manager is on duty that day. Unfortunately most people aren’t walking store rules and policies. That is why I have called each of my local stores and asked them what their store policy is. A lot of the time the first person I talk to will have absolutely no idea what the policy is. So I call often, learn who their managers are, I write what I learn down, and I bring it with me.
I tend to know the days my favorite cashiers work, and which store managers are coupon friendly. If you ever have had a bad day at a store because they did not accept your coupons that you spent so much time on, here is my own experience, just recently.
I went last night and was able to use my coupon at Albertsons, just fine. But as of this morning one of my local Albertsons has changed their policy. They will be happy to take any competitors coupon that are printed in the ad, but
they will not be taking competitors coupons printed off the internet. They said they can not tell which ones are fake. They will still be happy to take printed MFR (manufacturer coupons). All of this because the person counting coupons in the back didn’t like what was happening, not because the corporation came up with or changed a policy.

It only takes a moment to call, but a huge amount of savings. To which I and many of my readers can attest to!

Albertsons is a really coupon friendly store, I totally understand them not being able to take these coupons that “might” be a fake. Disappointed, yes but I understand. It is always best to follow the rules, be honest and that way we all benefit from coupon shopping. When people use “fake” coupons it hurts everyone….so please make sure you are always an honest coupon shopper. Thanks Albertsons for all the great deals!
