drip irrigationHarbor Freight Garden/Lawn Sale – Save 25% to 50% Off!

Each year I scourer the hardware box stores and the local stores to find the best deals to help me save money in my gardening. This year in my garden tractor forum I am a part of, I found an awesome deal on drip irrigation. Now matter how easy it is to just hook up a sprinkler and spray the garden, the plants them self’s do not like their leaves wet. It is hard on them in the heat, they wither and shrivel up in the heat when they are wet. By doing that they expel energy to fix their withered leaves. By setting up a drip line and only spraying the roots at ground level the plants are much healthier, the bugs are kept back as much as possible, and their are less weeds.  And you save water, which is great for those in low water areas!

Right now Harbor Freight is having a sale on drip line irrigation sets!

Get:

  • 100 feet of 1/4 inch drip line
  • 6 stakes
  • 4 drip ends
  • pressure regulator,
  • couplers

It was finally time to harvest our watermelon.  My 5 year old daughter has been tenderly watching over her watermelon plant all summer, watering it and making sure it is well cared for.  She even goes out and “pets” her baby watermelon and talks to it so it won’t be sad (since it is the only watermelon in the garden). So I was not sure how she would feel  about eating it…. well she was more than happy to cut it from the vine and go inside in EAT IT ALL UP.  Totally made me smile.  She is ready to grow another for next year!

We also have been harvesting our carrots, we planted rainbow carrots and they are fun to see the BOLD and beautiful colors! I planted them to close together so some of them came up in HUGE carrot clumps.  I am not sure if that is also what made them so twisted as well? Anyone know a trick to get all your carrots to grow straight?

I forgot to take a picture of our BIG pick of the week, but it looked about the same as last weeks ;)

Right now our garden is producing:

  • Carrots
  • Corn
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Roma Tomatoes
  • Beef steak tomatoes
  • Banana Peppers
  • Bell peppers
  • Yellow Squash
  • Zucchini
  • Swiss Chard
  • Strawberries
  • Cucumbers
  • Plums
  • Watermelon

Do any of you know what this pretty purple flower is?  It is an artichoke flower, we planted two plants this year and have enjoyed 7 artichokes harvested and eaten at our dinner table.  But one of them did not get picked in time, and it was a little to mature.  So we decided to let it go to flower instead.  I was not sure what to expect.  This stunning purple flower emerged with a 5 inch bloom! Kind of a fun little surprise!

We are still enjoying fresh produce from our garden daily, and the photo above is what we picked to share with our friends at church.  They happily took everything but a few zucchini. The kids love to pick the vegetables and share them each Sunday, it has been a great way to teach them to share with others!

Have you ever made the mistake of leaving a carrot on the counter or putting it in the refrigerator without a cover on it? Within 24 hours you will find a limp carrot that has lost it’s crunch!  No one wants to eat a chewy carrot, so here are a few tips on how to store carrots.

We have been picking carrots from our garden most the summer, but some days the kids are a little excited an pick  too many.  If you leave a fresh carrot with the green top on it will make the carrot wilt.  The carrot is the root of the plant and the green tops take its  moisture and nutrition from the root.  So chop those green tops off right away.

At this point you can keep them with the dirt on and store them in cool sand or sawdust in a root cellar, or even a bucket in a cool dark place.  BUT since I do not have one of those… I just wash them up and keep them in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator.   If the carrots have to much moister they will mold, so I poke some holes in the bag to allow them to vent.  Carrots can stay firm, and crisp for months at a time when stored properly.
